SINGAPURA 2 LAWAN 2 MALAYSIA

Malaysia’s preparation to defend the AFF SUZUKI CUP Trophy seems to have hit a rough patch as poor performances have derailed the team in recent games

This is very worrying as our Tigers have only recorded one win recently, against Sri Lanka in April.

Since then, Malaysia could only muster a disappointing goalless borefest against Philippines, last week.

To add to that misery, prolific players such as Safee Sali, Norshahrul Idlan Talaha and Safiq Rahim weren’t at their best. Several mistakes from the defence almost cost us dearly, if not the heroics of goalkeeper Farizal Marlias. Even substitutions made by K. Rajagopal were fruitless as our boys lacked any idea to penetrate the Phlippines backline.

Were we we relying too much on certain players such as Safiq Rahim, Norshahrul and Safee Sali? Or did we just run out of time to win that game?

Truth is, there were plenty of other players that were overlooked for this series of friendly fixtures. Certain players, if chosen would’ve been given the chance to showcase their talent and make a strong case for selection ahead of the Suzuki Cup slated to take place in December.

Take Badhri Radhi for instance. The midfielder is well-known for his creativity and instinctive passes, something which is sorely lacking in the national team. Badri’s vital role in midfield has inspired Kelantan FA to the AFC Cup quarter-finals. Besides Badri we also have Badrol Bakhtiar, who led Malaysia to a gold medal in the SEA Games recently. Alongside them, Joseph Kalang Tie and Zairo Anuar are just some of the names which could give Malaysia a different dimension to their play.

Pelita Jaya striker Safee Sali plays on a different limestone compared to the current crop of strikers available. But watching him play against the Philippines, Safee didn’t look a man on form. The strike-force combination of him and Norshahrul didn’t have much impact as both of them failed to convert any of the countless chances against the Azkals .Safee for one, looked lethargic and maybe needed some rest.

Perhaps national coach K. Rajagopal should tinker with his strikers and play Norshahrul alongside Shakir Ali. Shakir has already proven his capability by being the league’s top local striker to date. Pairing Shakir and Norshahrul could perhaps prove a masterstroke against Singapore if their combination pays off.

There has been a lot of criticism and nasty comments directed toward the national team. But the fact is that the supporters only want the best for our football team. We can’t afford to see Malaysia once again lunge into a freefall after all the achievements in recent years.

Our Malaysian Tigers now play against Singapore in a two legged friendly starting on Friday.

This match could be a preview of the AFF SUZUKI CUP final as Singapore is a strong contender to win the tournament.

I hope there will be changes to our game. If we lose, let us go down fighting. If we win, let’s take it as an encouraging sign to perform even better in the next game.

There is still time for Malaysia to put out a formidable squad that is capable of defending the AFF SUZUKI CUP.

Let us first begin with a morale boosting win to neighbors Singapore.
